It took 13 innings to do it but the Cubs were able to defeat the Pirates 8-7.
The Cubs scored first with a Rizzo RBI in the first. The Cubs took a 3-0 lead on a Soler RBI double and a Heyward RBI in the third. The Pirates got on the board with a solo home run by Bell in the fourth. The Pirates took the lead in the sixth on a Polanco three run home run to take a 4-3 lead. The Pirates added two more runs in the seventh on a Harrison two run double to make it 6-3. The Cubs scored two runs in the eighth on a Contreras two run home run to make it 6-5. The Cubs tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on a Soler solo home run. The Pirates took the lead in the top of the thirteenth on a Harrison sacrifice fly. The Cubs came back in the bottom of the thirteenth with a RBI single by Rizzo and a walk off RBI by Montero.
Neither starting pitcher got the decision. Cubs starting pitcher Arrieta gave up 6 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3 over 6 and 1/3 innings. Zastryzny got the win in relief. Pirates starting pitcher Brault gave up 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2 over 4 innings.
The Cubs continue their series with the Pirates today at 7:05.
