It was a quick Sunday game as the Eastern Illinois softball team downed Austin Peay 1-0 to earn the three-game sweep over the Governors. Jessica Wireman added to her OVC-leading shutout record pitching all seven innings in a game that lasted a little over an hour.
The Panthers improved to 15-23 on the season recording their sixth straight win, and are now 9-6 in the OVC maintaining a perfect 8-0 home OVC record. Austin Peay fell to 6-29 overall and 2-15 in the conference.
Wireman improved to 11-16 on the mound recording her fourth straight complete game shutout to give her seven total this season. The sophomore struck out six batter’s during Sunday’s game giving up only four hits with no walks.
EIU once again scored in the bottom of the first inning for the third straight game as Katie Watson ripped a two-out single up the middle to reach first. Watson eventually stole second base to record her third stolen base of the season. The Panthers were a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts against Austin Peay throughout the three-game series.
Kylie Bennett brought Watson around to score hitting a double to deep right field and adding to her team-leading RBI total which now stands at 22. That would prove to be the deciding run as neither team managed to cross home plate the rest of the game.
The Panthers only other hit on the day came from Kayla Bear who recorded her first career triple with a shot to right center field in the bottom of the third inning.
