The Illinois Senate has advanced a bill to raise the legal smoking age in the state from 18 to 21. Sponsor John Mulroe, a Chicago Democrat, says his bill would make it harder for young people to pick up what can often be a fatal lifelong habit.
On a six-to-three committee vote, the bill now moves to the full Senate, where it’s expected to face opposition from convenience store and gas station owners’ groups.
