Eastern Illinois University has announced the layoff of 198 civil service employees. The reason for the layoffs, according to the University, is the lack of budget at the state level.
In addition to the layoffs, other employees will be required to take one day of furlough per week until further notice, or June 30. The furlough days will begin in March.
EIU President David Glassman sent a letter on Monday to the university’s staff and students explaining the move. He said those to be laid off will be notified later this week. Glassman said if the university begins receiving state funds by the layoff date of March 12, the layoffs will be rescinded.
Public universities in the state have been without state funding since last summer.
