Registration for the free Summer Reading Challenge at the Effingham Public Library begins on May 1. Registration and the logging of reading will take place online. Logging begins on May 13 and anyone can track their reading using a mobile device or computer. Visit effinghamlibrary.org/summer-read for more information.
The Summer Reading Challenge keeps children reading over summer vacation and helps to prevent summer slide. Summer slide is another term for the learning loss that happens during the summer months when children are not engaged in educational activities. Studies have shown that access to books during the summer prevents a drastic loss in reading skill for children.
The Reading Challenge allows participants to earn rewards for reading. Rewards are received for completing Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. All participants, 0 to 12, who complete 4 reading levels (28 days of reading) will receive a book of their own to keep and an invite to a Pool Party. Those who read for 42 days will be honored at a Super Summer Reader “Graduation” Ceremony.
The Summer Reading Challenge at Effingham Public Library is open to all area children and adults. A library card is not needed to participate in this free program or any of the events at the library.
If you have questions, call the library at 217-342-2464, Ext. 1, or email info@effinghamlibrary.org

Lake Sara Beach, North Beach Road, Effingham, IL, USA
The Effingham Public Library and Effingham Masonic Lodge #149 will be co-hosting a launch party for the new permanent storywalk, placed on the Lake Sara Beach grounds. The launch party will be on Friday, May 3, from 4-6 and will include free hot dogs and chips and a take and make craft, both while supplies last.
The Effingham Public Library is proud to co-sponsor the permanent storywalk with Effingham Masonic Lodge #149. This project was made possible by a grant from the Illinois Masonic Children’s Assistance Program.
The storywalk will bring a new story each month to the trail that is part of the Lake Sara Beach grounds. The story walk is intended to provide a learning environment for families to take children for an interactive family building experience for the purpose of improving literacy in the community and encouraging physical activity.
To celebrate the first story, the Effingham Public Library and the Effingham Masonic Lodge #149 will host a free launch party for the community. The public is encouraged to attend and celebrate with us. While supplies last, we will have free hot dogs and chips as well as a take and make craft.
This is a free event. For more information, go to effinghamlibrary.org or call Amanda McKay, Director, at 217-342-2464 or email to amanda@effinghamlibrary.org.
