Effingham, IL-(Effingham Radio)- Legislation is headed to the governor that gives property tax breaks to more veterans in Illinois. Currently, many disabled veterans in the state are exempt from paying property taxes, but this would include World War Two vets regardless of any disability.
According to the National World War Two Museum, there are just over 6-thousand World War Two veterans living in Illinois. State Representative Rita Mayfield says the tax break is too great.
The measure also creates a homestead exemption for surviving spouses of fallen first responders.
