MATTOON, IL-(Effingham Radio)- A Mattoon woman was injured in an accident that closed I-57 for a brief time in Coles County on Friday.
According to a press release from the Illinois State Police, the accident occurred at milepost 189 at 12:13pm.
The report states that a vehicle driven by an 83 year Mattoon woman was traveling southbound in the right lane of I-57 at milepost 189.
At the same time, a semi tractor-trailer driven by a 62 year old male, of Hornbeak, Tennessee was traveling southbound in the left lane of I-57, passing a vehicle behind the Mattoon woman’s vehicle.
The Mattoon woman then suddenly turned into the left lane towards the crossover and the semi was unable to stop before striking the vehicle.
The vehicle then entered the crossover, entering the median, and overturning multiple times coming to a rest on its side.
The Mattoon woman was extricated and was flown to a hospital by Air Life.
The I-57 southbound lanes were closed for a brief time to allow the helicopter to land.
The semi sustained minor damage and the driver was not injured.
