EFFINGHAM, IL-(Effingham Radio)- The Effingham Fire Department fought a fire at the Effingham Assembly of God Church on Thursday night.
According to a post on their Facebook Page, the Department was called to a reported church fire at 3200 S Banker at 10:36pm.
While en-route to the fire, dispatch alerted crews to a confirmed fire and the Department upgraded the fire to a Full-Still.
This added additional Effingham, Teutopolis, and Watson fire crews and Abbott EMS and Shumway and Montrose crews for station coverage.
After arriving on scene, the Department reported heavy fire conditions at the peak of the roof on the north end of the church complex.
Crews then entered the church and reported light smoke conditions and minimal heat.
The fire was reported under control at 10:55pm.
The cause of the fire was determined to be a bird’s nest behind a cross on the exterior wall with a light that was illuminating it from behind.
The estimated cost of the damage is $30,000 with an additional cost of $20,000 of damage to the contents.
No injuries were reported and crews left the scene at 12:56am.
The Effingham Fire Department was assisted by the Effingham City Police and Effingham County Sheriff’s Deputies for traffic control.
