14 communities receive $6 million in funds to improve housing
EFFINGHAM, IL -(Effingham Radio)- Earlier Today, Governor Bruce Rauner announced the recipients of the $6 Million Community Development Block Grant for community housing renovations.
In a statement Rauner said, “Community development is essential for stable, safe and thriving neighborhoods.”
“The state is proud to assist these communities in their efforts to bring better living conditions to their low-income residents through residential improvement and rehabilitation projects.”
Amongst the 14 communities selected were Newton, and Salem.
Newton City Mayor, Mark Bolander, in a brief interview said, “It is great news. and we have been fortunate to receive funds through that program a few others. those programs are designed to make a real impact in our neighborhood.”
Bolander continued on saying they are wanting to use the funds for their housing rehab program, and they are looking forward to being able to renovate approximately 10 homes.
The city will be focusing on homes in the South Central area.
Communities with Low-Medium Incomes can apply for the grant.
