Effingham, Ill. (Springfield, Ill.) – The latest tax proposal at the Illinois Capitol would get the state more in line with the new federal tax code.
Republican State Rep Peter Breen yesterday unveiled a proposal that would allow people to essentially work around the elimination of the state and local tax deduction included in Congress’ plan.
Breen would allow homeowners to donate the amount of their property taxes to a local public school foundation, and get a 100 percent tax credit.
That would essentially allow them to write off the local taxes that they used to deduct.
Breen also wants to allow Illinois parents to pay for private elementary and high school tuition from the state’s prepaid tuition program.
