Effingham, Il – Savannah Weiss, 22, Appeared in Coles County Court Yesterday morning for her first appearance after her arrest earlier this month.
According to Metro News, Weiss pled not guilty to charges that she left her toddler son alone to die while she went out for the weekend.
Her attorney entered her plea during a hearing yesterday in Coles County.
WCIA reported that during the hearing, “One detective took the stand in court.”
“He says Weiss bought Jimmy John’s for herself and her friends while her son was starving to death just a few blocks away.”
The same dectective according to WCIA shared details of what he saw the day 2 year-old Malachi was found dead.
“It was originally reported Weiss left the baby in the playpen with two pb&j sandwiches and a vitamin water bottle.”
“The detective says all he saw in the playpen was a bowl of chicken strips, a pillow and a lifeless toddler.”
While this is new information the detective did say that the possibility of sandwiches being in the pen was possible, however due to the large mess found around the playpen it was hard to really tell.
In addition to those remarks the detective shared that Weiss had stayed at a friend’s house for the weekend, but did not check in on her child once.
The next hearing is set for Jan. 8.
