(Charleston, IL) — There’s another push to rename Douglas Hall at Eastern Illinois University. A former professor, Chris Hanlon, on Tuesday asked the school to rename the dorm. The building is named for Fredrick Douglas, the former Democratic Senator from Illinois who debated Abraham Lincoln in Charleston in 1858. Hanlon says because Douglas supported slavery, his name must be removed from the building. He’s pitched the idea before, and EIU officials turned him down in the past. There’s no official word from the university about the latest proposal.
