UPDATE: According to a report from the Illinois State Police, both semi drivers were injured in the accident. Their preliminary investigation indicated that 26 year old, Denis Elkaz, of Hamtramck, Michigan was stopped in traffic on I-70 eastbound due to the backup of traffic from construction in Montrose. At the same time, 30 year old, James Ranspot, of Henrietta, Texas was traveling on I-70 eastbound and struck the rear of the trailer being pulled by Elkaz. The impact caused significant damage to Ranspot’s truck and partially spilled the load being hauled by Elkaz. Elkaz was taken to HSHS St Anthony’s Memorial Hospital for treatment. Ranspot was taken to Carle Hospital in Champaign. Ranspot was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
UPDATE: We have received reports that traffic is backed up on Route 40. In Montrose it is backed up for 2-3 miles and in Teutopolis it is backed up 4 blocks at the stop sign.
UPDATE: We have reports that traffic is backed up through Effingham from the accident on I-70 eastbound.
UPDATE: An accident involving two semis occurred on I-70 eastbound in between Montrose and Teutopolis. Montrose and Teutopolis Fire Departments are on scene, as well as an ambulance, police, and Air Evac. Traffic is backed up for several miles. Please find an alternate route.
We have reports of a two semi accident at the Montrose exit on Interstate 70. This would be exit 105. Please avoid the area if possible.
