Multiple police departments are investigating a homicide that took place on 7th Street in Charleston early Saturday morning.
According to a news release from the Charleston Police Department, police officers were called to the 1000 block of 7th Street at 2:28am on Saturday for a reported sound of a gunshot. Upon arrival, officers discovered two victims with gunshot wounds. One victim was transported to Carle Hospital in Champaign by helicopter, where he succumbed to his injuries. He has been identified as 23 year old, Byron Edingburg, of Chicago. The second victim survived from his injuries; however, further status of his condition is unknown.
At 3:07am on Saturday, officers reported to a second report of gunshots in the 2000 block of 12th Street in Charleston. No victims were reported for this incident. The Charleston Police Department is currently investigating both incidents. They are being assisted by the Coles County State’s Attourney’s Office, the Coles County Sheriff’s Office, Eastern Illinois University Police Department, and the Mattoon Police Department.
