A 16 year old from Newton was injured in an accident that occurred on Monday morning at the intersection of IL Route 130 and Jasper County Rd 600N.
At approximately 10:50am, 67 year old, Philip Pankey, of Lowell, Indiana was stopped on IL Route 130, waiting to make a left turn onto CR 600N. A Chevy Impala, being driven by a 16 year old from Newton, was stopped behind Pankey, waiting until after Pankey had made his turn to continue traveling straight on IL Route 130. A Dodge pickup, being driven by a 16 year old from Sumner and containing two additional 16 year old minors and a 14 year old minor, all from Newton, was traveling southbound on IL Route 130 and was approaching Pankey and the Chevy Impala. The minor driving the pickup failed to yield for the stopped vehicles and struck the Impala in the rear-end. The impact caused the Impala to strike Pankey’s vehicle in the rear-end. The pickup then shoved the Impala into the ditch on the west side of the roadway, where both the pickup and the Impala came to a rest. Pankey pulled his vehicle off to the side of the roadway. The minor driving the Impala was transported to HSHS St Anthony’s Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The minor driving the pickup was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and exceeding the one passenger limit for a graduated driver’s license.
