(Springfield, IL) — The state’s community colleges say they can help to fill the expected shortage of registered nurses if they’re allowed to expand their offerings to include four-year bachelor’s degrees. Lawmakers could take up the bill after the new General Assembly is seated in January, but it’s already meeting opposition from the state’s public universities. The bill’s sponsor, Senator Andy Manar, says action is needed because nearly a third of the state’s older nurses plan to retire within the next five years.
