(Chicago, IL) — The U.S. Labor Department says Illinois is doing a bad job at getting back unemployment money that was overpaid. In fact, Illinois does a worse job, percentage-wise, than any other state. The Labor Department said Illinois recovered only 37-percent of the 714-million dollars in unemployment overpayments between 2012 and 2016. That’s 450-million dollars the cash-strapped state couldn’t use for other purposes, like funding its pensions or paying overdue bills. The feds are moving in to assist the state in doing better in making sure that people who get unemployment benefits qualify for them.
