With news of the Zika Virus continuing to be a topic of discussion on the world stage, some have made attempts to take advantage of others by promising cures. According to Joey Keys, Regional Director for the Better Business Bureau, scammers will try to use any hot topic to make a buck.
Keys’ suggested to be skeptical of anything online touting Zika prevention or a cure. You should especially avoid any site looking for investors for a Zika cure or prevention product.
While there is no vaccine for Zika yet, the CDC does have guidelines for prevention that include avoiding mosquito bites as much as possible. Some tips are to wear insect repellent while outdoors, wear long sleeved clothing and pants, and to use mosquito nets if sleeping outdoors. Zika can also be transmitted sexually, so practicing safe sex can help reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
