Robert McFarling, age 101, of Indianapolis, passed away on September 9, 2016. He was born July 10, 1915 in Marshall, IL, the son of Leonard I. & Ora Dell (Partlow) McFarling.
His father owned a grain elevator in Marshall, and young Bob attended school there until the third grade. He also attended grade school in Hazel Dell, IL and graduated from high school in Casey, IL.
Bob worked on the family farm during the 1930’s and later worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Terre Haute and the Mid State Egg Company in Casey, IL. In 1935, he married Grace G. Hawker McFarling, and in 1940 they moved to Indianapolis, where Bob assisted in building the Egg Breaking and Drying Plant. He was appointed plant manager and oversaw a staff of 350 employees.
In 1945 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served until his discharge in 1946, and returned to Mid State Products Company as plant manager. In 1950, Bob and three of his brothers formed McFarling Brothers Company, where they designed and built a small capacity poultry processing plant.
Bob, a very active member of the state and the community, was the past president of the Indiana Poultry Association, past president of Weekday Religious Education, Inc., and was a member and former chairman of the board of University Park Christian Church. Bob was a board member of the Christian Church Foundation (Disciples of Christ). He had a lifetime of involvement with Gleaners Food Bank and was past chairman of their board. Bob was on the planning committee for Robin Run. He was president of Fortune Finance Company and an officer and stockholder in McFarling Brothers, Inc. Bob was a recipient of the Sagamore of the Wabash Award. He was a Mason for 77 years and was active in the Jaycees.
In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and fishing. He also loved to play piano and harmonica.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of nearly 78 years, Grace (Hawker) McFarling, and six sisters and five brothers.
He is survived by his loving family, which includes his children, Jane Nielson (Duane), Robert McFarling (Jacqueline), Char Hood (Darrell), and Michael McFarling (Becky); eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan – Washington Park North, 2706 Kessler Blvd. West Drive, with visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Entombment will be in Washington Park North Cemetery.
