Coming off a win over FBS member Miami (Ohio) on Saturday evening, transfer quarterback Mitch Kimble was named the Ohio Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week while also taking home OVC Newcomer of the Week honors. Kimble, making his second start for EIU, led the Panthers to a 21-17 win over Miami hitting Devin Church for the game winning touchdown with 56 seconds remaining in the game.
For the game he completed 19-of-32 passes for 150 yards and three touchdowns, rushed for a team-high 49 yards and also caught a pass for 23 yards. He tossed a three-yard score to Addison Bounds before halftime to pull the Panthers to within three points at 10-7. With his team down 17-7 in the final minutes of the game, he led the Panthers on a 16-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by a 3-yard pass to Dennis Turner. After a three-and-out by Miami, Kimble led the team 51 yards in eight plays which ended on a 7-yard touchdown pass to Devin Church with 56 seconds left. Overall Kimble passed for 70 yards on the final two EIU possessions of the game and on the game-winning drive added a 14-yard scramble on third down to keep the drive alive. It marked the team’s first win over a FBS opponent since 2013. Kimble currently ranks eighth nationally in passing touchdowns (5), 11th in points responsible for (18.0/game), 19th in total offense (269.5 yards/game) and 23rd in passing yards (236.5 yards/game).
The Panthers return to action on Saturday as they will face Illinois State in the 105th playing of the Mid-America Classic. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Net Chicago at 2 p.m.
