Jon Lester came up big for the Cubs…just not on the mound. Lester had the game winning RBI on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the twelfth to give the Cubs a 7-6 win.
The Mariners got on the board first with a two run home run by Cruz in the top of the first to make it 2-0. The Mariners got another two run home run by Canó in the second to make it 4-0. The Mariners added one more two run home run by Lee in the third to make it 6-0. The Cubs got on the board in the fifth with a bases loaded walk to Zobrist followed by Russell getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-2. The Cubs got an RBI triple from Zobrist in the seventh to make it 6-3. The Cubs scored again in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Russell RBI single, a Contreras RBI, and a wild pitch to tie the game at 6. The Cubs scored the winning run on a walk off bunt by Lester scoring Heyward from third.
Neither starting pitcher got the decision. Cubs starter Matusz gave up 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out 2 and walking 2 over 3 innings. Rondón got the win in relief. Mariners starter Hernández gave up 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 8 and walking 5 over 5 innings. Martin took the loss in relief.
The Cubs begin a series with the Marlins today at 7:05.
