The Cardinals were able to do something that no one has done in 52 games, get Met’s closer Jeurys Familia to blow a save. The Cardinals got two runs in the top of the ninth to get the 5-4 win.
The Mets scored first with an RBI single by Walker in the second inning. The Cardinals came back in the third with a Holliday two run double followed by an Adams RBI single to make it 3-1. The Mets added 3 runs in the seventh thanks to a Wainwright wild pitch and a Céspedes two run 447 foot home run to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the ninth on a Molina RBI double. The Cardinals took the lead on a Wong pinch hit RBI double with two out in the ninth to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead.
Neither starting pitcher was a factor in the decision. Wainwright started for the Cardinals giving up 4 runs on 11 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1 over 6 and 2/3 innings. Broxton got the win in relief. Oh record his sixth save of the year. Verrett was the starter for the Mets. Verrett gave up 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7 and walking 3 over 7 innings. Familia took the loss in relief.
