Several Area students recently returned from the 2016 “Youth to Washington Tour” that took place last week. Marcail Clark, of Strasburg, and Sterling Howard, of Windsor, represented Shelby Electric Cooperative and Sam Larch, of Rinard; Chyanne Plumb, and Justice Robey, both of Louisville Represented Clay Electric Cooperative.
The annual event, established by electric and telephone cooperatives in the late 1950s, is a chance for students to learn about democratic government and cooperatives.
The five area students met with Congressman John Shimkus and were among 64 other rural students from Illinois to attend the tour. There were more than 16,00 students participating from across the nation.
Students visited the Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, the Washington National Cathedral, several Smithsonian Museums, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Would War II Memorial, many presidential memorials, the National Archives, and the The Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia.
The program is for high school juniors.
