The Illinois State Police District 12 Troopers will be conducting Occupant Restraint Enforcement Patrols (OREP) during the month of June. The patrols will be conducted in Clay, Cumberland, Effingham, and Jasper Counties.
Through these patrols, officers will be able to target an area with saturation patrols and focus on traffic violations and compliance with seat belt and child seat laws.
Illinois State laws require that the driver and all passengers in a vehicle to be buckled up. Seat belts are one of the most effective safety devices in a vehicle. Correct use of seat belts and child seats isĀ estimated to save over 12,000 lives per year. Over half of the fatalities in vehicle crashes were caused by the person not being properly buckled in.
This project is being funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Traffic Safety.
