The Pirates got on the board first with a Harrison RBI in the second. The Pirates took a 2-0 lead with a Jaso RBI single in the fifth. The Cardinals came back with a Carpenter 3 run home run in the top of the eighth to make it 3-2. The Pirates tied the game at 3 with a Mercer RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. The game then went into extra innings. The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the twelfth after an Adam Wainwright 2 run double. The Cardinals added another run on an Adams RBI double, a Peralta RBI single, and a Moss 2 run home run to make it 9-3.
Cardinals starting pitcher Michael Wacha gave up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 5 over 7 innings. Pirates starter Gerrit Cole only pitched 2 innings as he had to leave with right tricep tightness.
