When local women Cortney Hanna sent a care package to her brother, an active duty Airman stationed in Kuwait, she wasn’t expecting that it would lead to formation of a local non-profit dedicated to helping current and past service members. After hearing about her brother sharing some of the candy from his care package with other deployed soldiers, Hanna decided to send some extra supplies for Christmas for the whole unit. The outpouring of support for the project led Hanna to file the necessary paperwork to Establish Helping Heroes Inc.
Now the organization is established, complete with board of directors, and is already gearing up and raising funds for next Christmas. According to Hanna, the focus of the groups is still on the Christmas care-packages for deployed soldiers, but they ultimately want to expand to services to veterans at home as well.
Helping Heroes will be holding a fundraising event at the American Legion Post in Edgewood this Saturday beginning at noon. Hanna said that all proceeds from the event will support the group’s Christmas care-passages to send overseas.
