Olney resident David Mitchell Carter has been sentenced on the charge of Theft of Government Funds. The 50-year-old Carter will spend six months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, with the first six months to be served under home confinement. The court also ordered Carter to pay restitution to the Social Security Administration in the amount of $77,353. The charge relates to fraud upon the Social Security benefit program.
Court proceedings indicated that from January 2008, continuing to January 2014, Carter stole money belonging to the Social Security Administration by concealing his employment status in order to receive benefits from the Social Security Administration’s Title II Disability Insurance Benefits program, to which he knew he was not entitled by failing to disclose income through employment.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General, Office of Investigations.
