In October state officials stopped sending renewal reminders to drivers who’s license plates were nearing their expiration date. The decision was estimated to save the state approximately $450,000. An expected side effect of the stoppage of mailed reminders has appeared to come true, as nearly $5 million has been collected in late fees and tickets.
During the first three months of the year the total in fines reached $4.9 million, with $2.2 million coming in March.
Fines for late-vehicle plate renewals are $20.
A bill is pending to suspend the fines until reminders can be mailed again.
