A new survey finds that Illinois still has the second-highest property taxes in the nation, behind only New Jersey. The personal finance website WalletHub said the average effective property tax rate in Illinois is 2.25 percent, slightly less than New Jersey’s 2.29 percent. Hawaii has the lowest effective tax rate at 0.28 percent, but the average home in Hawaii costs nearly three times the price of an average Illinois house.
