Effingham High School teacher Joe Fatheree has been named a top 10 finalist for the Global Teacher of the Year Project. Fatheree was selected as one of 50 finalists for the award in December. The Project was launched by the Varkey Foundation in 2014 to raise the stature of the teaching profession. The award underlines the importance of the teacher profession and symbolizes that teachers throughout the world deserve to be recognized and celebrated.
Following his selection as one of the 50 finalists, a film crew made of Fatheree’s students put together a video highlighting his teaching (seen below). Now that Mr. Fatheree has made it to the final 10, he will travel to a banquet in Dubai with the other finalists, at which time the winner will be announced. The Global Teacher of the Year Project comes with a $1 million prize.
Regarding Mr. Fatheree’s previous accomplishments, he was named Illinois Teacher of the Year in 2007 and was awarded the NEA’s National Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009. He has over 25 years of teaching experience. The ten finalists come from 9 countries.
