An agreement has been announced between the Illinois Department of Transportation and Amtrak to maintain existing levels of service without fare increases.
Under the plan, two daily round trips will remain in place between Chicago and Carbondale, which includes a stop in Effingham. Four daily round trips between Chicago and St. Louis will also remain.
The state will contribute just over $38 million to Amtrak in subsidies, which is less than previous years, but more than what Governor Rauner proposed. Amtrak estimates over two-million state residents ride the rail service annually.
