The University of Illinois Men’s Basketball team picked up a much need conference win Wednesday at Rutgers. The Illini got the win 110-101 in a game that took three overtimes to have an outcome.
Illinois trailed by as much as 12 in the first half, but managed to get within 3 40-37 at halftime. Rutgers led for most of the second half until a Maverick Morgan jumper with 3:10 left gave Illinois a one point lead. The teams traded leads until a Malcom Hill bucket put the Illini up one with 10 seconds to play. Corey Sanders of Rutgers was fouled and made one of two free throws to send the game to overtime.
In the first overtime Illinois led by 7 with 29 seconds left, but Rutgers was able to come back and force a second overtime with the score tied at 87. Both teams struggled to score in the second overtime, each putting six points on the board and going scoreless in the final two minutes.
The third overtime was all Illinois. The Illini jumped out to a 7 point lead and were able to seal the win as they shot 10 of 10 from the free throw line in the final 1:15.
Rutgers freshman Corey Sanders was the leading scorer in the game with 39. Malcolm Hill led the Illini with 32. Sanders wasn’t the only freshman with a big game. Illinois’ Jalen Coleman-Lands had 26. Maverick Morgan also had 20 for Illinois. With the win Illinois improved to 11-12 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
