Ameren Illinois has donated $40,000 to the CEFS Economic Opportunity Corporation to help customers with their energy bills. Hardship grants will be available to local residents who meet income-eligibility guidelines.
“Many customers, particularly those in lower-income areas, are seeking relief to pay their energy bills,” Ameren President Richard Mark said. “Ameren Illinois is committed to serving the community and that’s why we’re partnering with local social service agencies to provide relief to those who need it the most.”
The CEFS Economic Opportunity Corporation will use this grant to help households who are Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) eligible between zero and 150 percent of the 2015 Federal Poverty Guidelines.
The LIHEAP program offers assistance to low-income households to better afford the rising cost of energy through direct financial assistance, energy counseling, outreach, and education. Particular emphasis is placed on serving the elderly, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals in our seven county service area of Christian, Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Montgomery, Moultrie, and Shelby counties in Illinois.
The program provides a one-time payment for eligible households to be used for energy bills. The amount of payment is determined by household size, fuel type, and the household’s 30-day income. Renters whose utilities are included in their rent can qualify for a one-time cash payment if their rent is greater than 30% of their income. Reconnection assistance may be available if the household is disconnected from an energy source needed for heating and/or a delivered fuel supplier has refused to deliver and the tank contains 25% or less. The program also includes an emergency furnace repair or replacement component for homeowners.
Qualifiers are based on 30 day income and the number of people in a household. Financial eligibily is as follows:
Family Size 30 Day Income Annual Income
1 $1,471 $17,655
2 $1,991 $23,895
3 $2,511 $30,135
