The Cumberland Pirates are moving on the finals of the Southeast Division bracket in the Little Okaw Valley Division boys basketball tournament. The Pirates improved to 11-8 on the season with a 68-62 win over Heritage-Villa Grove. Cumberland led 37-30 at the half, and held a 9 point lead early in the third quarter. Heritage’s defenses picked up the intensity to tie the game on a 9-0 run. Cumberland would reclaim the lead, but it was a slim one at 53-52 heading into the fourth quarter. It was the Pirate’s defense that picked it up in the fourth quarter, holding Heritage to just three field goals.
Cumberland was led by Tyson Magee’s 23 points. Gunner McMechan had 14 for the Pirates, all in the first half. With the win, Cumberland will play Oblong on Friday at 8:00pm. The winner will advance to the championship, while the losing team will play for third place. Cumberland’s games on Friday and Saturday will both be broadcast on 100.5/99.5FM WCRA.
