A memorial (seen to the right) was dedicated in downtown Effingham last month to honor State Police Troopers from the local District 12 who were killed in the line of duty. While work on the memorial was ongoing there was also an effort to rename portions of Interstate 57 after two of these officers.
Area State Senator Dale Righter said that both the Senate and House have approved legislation that designates the section of Interstate 57 from the Tri-level south of Effingham to Watson Exit 151 as the “Trooper Frank Doris Memorial Highway,” and the section of Interstate 57 from the Tri-level north of Effingham to the southern Shelby County line as the “Trooper Layton T. Davis Memorial Highway”.
Officers Layton Davis and Frank Doris were both killed in the line of duty, Davis in 1976 and Doris in 1967.
At this time their is no schedule for when signs in memory of the officers will be dedicated and placed along the interstate.
