An Effingham man as found not guilty this week by an Effingham County jury on a lone count of Aggravated Battery. The charge against 24-year-old Benjamin C. Wilson arose following a stabbing complaint in the 500 block of North 1st Street in Effingham on September 20th of last year.
The trial took two days, at the end of which Wilson was exonerated on a claim of self-defense.
“Being made a defendant in this matter last September was a real disappointment to Benji,” said Wilson’s attorney Scott Ealy. “The jury’s unanimous decision in his favor will mean a clean record for this young military veteran and a brighter future.”
Wilson had been staying at a friend’s apartment as a short term guest when the incident occurred, Ealy said. A dispute arose with a downstairs neighbor when that person shut off the power to the apartment in response to purportedly loud music.
Wilson was released from the Effingham County Jail following the announcement of the jury’s verdict. He had been held in custody at the jail continuously since his arrest in the early morning hours of September 20th.
