A bomb threat was made Wednesday afternoon at Mattoon Middle School, but the threat was found to be Not credible.
Mattoon police arrived on the scene after 3:00pm and investigated the threat. Mattoon Police Chief Jeff Branson said that officers searched the school building and found the claim was not credible, and was a prank.
When the threat was made students were safely evacuated to Franklin School and Broadway Christian Church. Students were able to return to school before dismissal, and buses arrived on schedule and departed the school at the regular dismissal time.
Regarding the threat, Mattoon Super Intendment Larry Lilly said any threats of violence to students, staff or buildings are taken seriously.
“We appreciate the leadership of administration and staff and cooperation of students,” Lilly said. “We also appreciate the quick response by the Mattoon police department and we thank them for their efforts.”
