The Illinois men’s basketball team went on the road Thursday to take on Michigan State in East Lansing, where they were dealt their third straight loss 79-54. The Illini kep things close for about four minutes, at which point the Spartans ran away with the win. With 15:47 left in the first half Michigan State led by just 3 points. The Spartans out scored Illinois 37-15 over the remainder of the first half, taking a 47-22 lead into halftim. The teams would play even the rest of the way, scoring 32 a piece in the second half.
Illinois was without their leading scorer Kendrick Nunn, who didn’t make the trip due to the birth of his first child. Michigan State was also without top scorer Denzel Valentine, who remains out with an injury.
The loss dropped Illinois to 8-8 overall, and 0-3 in the conference. Michigan State improved to 15-1 overall with a 2-1 Big Ten record.
