The Effingham Lady Hearts got a big conference win Thursday over Salem. Salem led by seven in the fourth quarter, but the Hearts came back to force overtime where they went on to win 55-52.
Free throws were a big story in the game. Effingham shot 38 times from the foul stripe, but made just 19 of those shots. Salem’s percentage wasn’t much better, shooting 57%. The difference was that Salem attempted half the number of free throws as Effingham, making 11 of 19.
With the win Effingham improved to 14-4 overall with a 3-2 record in the Apollo Conference. The loss dropped Salem to 14-3 overall and 3-2 in the Apollo. Effingham’s Carsyn Fearday was the games leading scorer with 21. Marranda Steffen also had 14 for the Hearts.
