State Superintendent Tony Smith was in Effingham Thursday to meet with Effingham High School teacher Joe Fatheree. Fatheree (seen above speaking at a press conference following his nomination) is a finalist for the Global Teacher of the Year project.
Fatheree was selected from more than 8,000 entries as one of the 50 finalists for the project, which was started in 2014 by theVarkey Foundation. Among his accolades, Fatheree was named Illinois Teacher of the Year in 2007 and was awarded the NEA’s National Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009.
As a finalist for the award, the next step in the process will see a film crew of Fatheree’s students putting together a video in January highlighting his teaching. That will be followed by the selection of a top 10 from the finalists, who will travel to a banquet in Dubai where the winner will be selected.
