The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office has announced that John Long (seen above) has been hired as a full time deputy. Deputy Long will replace the Effingham County Deputy that will be assigned to the Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force. Long’s salary will be supplemented by a grant from the Task Force.
Long was born and raised in Effingham. He graduated from Effingham High School in 1989 and the joined the Army shortly afterward. Long spent 20 years as an active-duty member of both the US Army and the US Army National Guard. During that time, he served overseas in the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He retired as a recruiter for the National Guard in January 2015.
Deputy Long has worked in law enforcement in Effingham County, both fulltime and part-time, for the last 16 years. He has recently been employed part-time with both the Effingham County Sheriff’s Department and the Effingham City Police Department.
