In their first game of the new year the Cumberland Pirates were on the road taking on the Marshall Lions. The teams went back-and-forth early, with Marshall holding a 20-19 lead after one quarter. The Lions pulled away in the second quarter, taking a 42-31 lead into the half. Marshall’s Josiah Wallace scored 13 of his game high 32 points in the 2nd quarter. Cumberland was able to battle back in the 3rd quarter. The Pirates got within 3 late in the quarter, but a turnover led to a last second bucket for Wallace giving Marshall a 57-52 lead heading into the final quarter. The Pirates continued to battle in the fourth quarter, with a late three-pointer from getting Cumberland again within three points. Marshall though was able to knock down their free throws in the game’s final minute and held on for a 70-63 win.
Along with Wallace’s 32, Brock Finkbiner had 15 and Spencer Shaffner scored 14 for the Lions. Cumberland was led by Blayke Cutt’s 20. Gunner McMechan was also in double figures for the Pirates with 10.
With the win Marshall is now 10-3. Cumberland fell to 6-7 with the loss. The Pirates will be back in action on Friday, January 8 at home against Okaw Valley. Pregame coverage will begin at approximately 7:30 on 100.5/99.5 WCRA.
