According to Rolling Stone, a crowdfunded Stat Trek film entitled Axanar is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit from Paramount and CBS. Trek fans raised over $1 million to help fund a professional quality prequel film that takes place before Captain Kirk first set foot on the Enterprise.
The weird thing is that up until this point CBS has been, admirably so, accepting of Trek Fan productions. Fans practically made a whole series called Star Trek: Renegades that also crowdfunded and CBS did not intervene. So why the sudden, aggressive suing?
It could be because CBS is concerned about either the upcoming Trek film or new TV series. But seriously? Is CBS and Paramount really worried that a fan film is going to steal revenue from their massive Star Trek franchise juggernaut? I agree that people’s intellectual/creative property should be protected by law, but this is a case where two unfathomably large media corporations are lashing out at the very people (Trek fans) who consume their products for little reason other than greed. Not cool.
