The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a flood warning for the counties of Crawford, Jasper, Richland, Clark, Clay, Effingham, Cumberland, and Lawrence. The flood warning will be in effect until 11:45am Wednesday.
Flooding has been reported on numerous secondary roads across southeast Illlinois. Rainfall of 5 to 7 inches has occurred in much of the southeastern part of the state since Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, specific areas that are experiencing flooding include Effingham, Olney, Robinson, Flora, Lawrenceville, Marshall, Newton, Toledo, Sumner, Casey, Altamont, Neoga, Teutopolis, Greenup, Oblong, Palestine, Martinsville, Louisville, Clay City, and Watson.
This includes the following sections of area interstate roads:
Interstate 57 between mile markers 142 and 179.
Interstate 70 between mile markers 79 and the Indiana border.
Drivers are reminded that excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams,as well as farm and country roads. Do not attempt to travel across flooded roads. find alternate routes.
Additionally, do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. the water depth may be too great to allow safe crossing.
