Every day I tell myself, “Ethan, you talk about Star Wars too much. Ease off.” Then I promptly see something awesome about Star Wars and blog about it. This is my life. Anyway, here’s a Buzzfeed list of 37 things that were cut from Star Wars: The Force Awakens during production.
For the most part I wouldn’t change the film at all, but having an underwater scene in the ruins of the second Death Star would have been eerie and awesome.
In other Star Wars News, I found out today that Star Wars: VIII is not being directed by J.J. Abrams. This worries me because he did such a fantastic job with The Force Awakens. The new person at the helm is Rian Johnson, his most recent film was Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis. I liked the film overall, but that age transition between JGL and Bruce Willis was rough.
Johnson also directed a personal favorite of mine, Brick, a stylish re-imagining of film noir. Brick also featured JGL along with Noah Segan (also of Looper). Johson has TV experience as well. He directed two episodes of Breaking Bad, The Fly and Ozymandias (that’s the episode where Hank dies).
Johnson’s resume is impressive, but nothing he’s done is really anything like Star Wars. He seems to have a thing for film noir style, Brick is an obvious tribute and Looper has plenty of noir-type conventions. It will be cool to see some of that style come out in Star Wars: VIII. That said, J.J. Abrams has praised Star Wars: VIII’s script, so I have high hopes!
