The Effingham Unit 40 Board of Education held their final meeting of 2015 Monday night. At the meeting the Board discussed a potential sports complex project that would be a collaboration with the Effingham Sportsbackers. The Sportsbackers have approached the school board about a providing a fieldhouse sports complex at the high school. The complex would have an indoor turf surface, and would provide a year-round practice facility for athletics and other activities, including band. The Sportsbackers have expressed a desire to fund the project, but there are still concerns about longterm maintenence and insurance costs that the District would have to cover. At this time the project is just in the discussion stage.
The Board also heard a school report card and Title I presentation from Curriculum Director Michelle Beck. The presentation highlighted the ongoing effort in the district to adapt to new learning and testing standards, including PARCC testing. The presentation also noted that district and individual school report cards are available online at the district’s website. These report cards include information on the background demographics of the district’s students. The district report card also allows comparison between the Effingham district and state averages, including areas such as academics and graduation rates.
Effingham High School teacher Joe Fatheree spoke to the board at the meeting’s conclusion. Mr. Fatheree, who is a finalist for the global teacher prize, shared with the board the process now that he has been named a finalist. A press conference was held earlier this month when Fatheree was first named a finalist. Video from that press conference is available HERE.
It was also announced that effective July 1, 2017 (for the 2017-2018 school year) Effingham High School Principal Jason Fox will become Assistant Superintendent. Kurt Roberts, who is an assistant principal at Effingham Jr. High School will take over the principal role at the High School.
