Three individuals are now in custody in the Fayette County Jail after they attempted to flee from State Police following a traffic stop. Fayette County Sheriff Chris Smith says the Illinois State Police attempted to make the traffic stop on Interstate 70 at the 67 mile marker. During the attempted stop the subjects fled, going east on I-70 before exiting off the interstate at the St. Elmo exit. Sheriff Smith says the individuals then fled on foot before they were apprehended. The individuals arrested were 33-year-old Shawn Adamson and 26-year-old Corey Mitchell, both of Mattoon, and 27-year-old Flora resident Christine Koehler.
Adamson is facing pending charges of aggravated fleeing or eluding police, driving while license suspended or revoked, obstructing justice, unlawful use or possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and improper display of registration. Mitchell was arrested on pending charges of obstructing justice, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a firearm or ammunition. Koehler was charged with resisting or obstructing a peace officer.
Several agencies were involved in the search and capture of the individuals, including the Fayette County Sheriff’s office, Marion County Sheriff’s office, Illinois State Police, Conservation Police, and the St. Elmo, Farina and Altamont Police Departments.
