The first trailer for the next installment of the rebooted Star Trek Universe, Star Trek Beyond, has been released.
Sabotage, by the Beastie Boys, really? The last two Trek movies have really deviated from the original formula. That may not be the wrong thing to do. After all, Trek doesn’t have the greatest track record with movies. At the same time, I feel like the modern series has lost the political and moral complexities that were present in both Star Trek and The Next Generation. I have enjoyed the first two reboots, directed by J.J. Abrams, but they didn’t make me think. Into Darkness was really onto something with the question about how to deal with the war-like Klingons, who made no appearance in the new trailer, but fell short opting instead for ridiculous fight scenes and bad humor.
But enough of my ranting. Star Trek Beyond will hit theaters next July and is directed Justin Lin of the Fast and Furious series. The new film will bring back the new/old crew including Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, and Karl Urban as Bones. Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella will also appear as yet unnamed roles.
