Amtrak ridership is falling across Illinois. The train company says lower gas prices and the high speed rail construction is leading to about a 4% drop in passengers this fiscal year. About 1.3 million passengers in Illinois used Amtrak this year. According to Amtrak there were 358,578 people, also a 4% decrease from the previous year, who traveled on the route through South Central Illinois. That route goes from Carbondale to Chicago, and includes Effingham. Lower gas prices and the ongoing construction of a high speed rail from St. Louis to Chicago are considered contributing factors in the decline in ridership.
