Effingham has been named the 5th Best Christmas Town in Illinois by onlyinyourstate.com.
“This is a real honor and makes this Christmas holiday even more special for Effingham! The recognition is validation that the time and effort put in by the various groups, committees, and city staff is paying off,” stated Mayor Jeff Bloemker. “It’s just another sign of the momentum and energy this city has built up in recent years. Special thanks go out to Matt Wortman and the Public Property Team, Jodi Thoele and the Tourism Team, and Lori Worman, Dacia Albin, Norma Lansing and the Effingham Central Business Group for lighting up the town this year!”
Effingham has many Christmas related activities going on throughout the city during the holiday season. The Wonderland in Lights is a decade long tradition in Effingham’s Community Park. Wonderland in Lights is a drive-through light display featuring a variety of lighted holiday scenes including flying reindeer, Santa coming down the chimney, a Nativity scene and much more. The Effingham Convention and Visitor’s Bureau continues to add lights displays every year. On Saturdays Santa visits and brings special presents to the children.
This is also the second year for the Holiday Lights and Festive Sights Light Competition. This competition encourages residents in Effingham to decorate their homes and businesses to help spread holiday cheer and welcome visitors throughout the season. Contestants can be entered into four different categories that are voted on by the public.
Downtown Effingham also comes alive at the beginning of every Christmas season as the Effingham Central Business Group puts on the annual Hometown Christmas. This includes Santa making his first appearance at the Santa House, horse drawn carriage rides, cookie decorating, and the Mayor lighting the Christmas tree.
